The Project consists of upgrading the Mansourieh – Daychounieh road; the road length is about 4 km. On a critical portion 300m in length the soil on the upper is sandy and would be excavated from ~5m to 11m in height. Hence, a shoring system is necessary to achieve the excavation and work as a permanent retaining structure. The soil is Clayey Sand. The traditional concrete wall was not practical for the following reasons: High risk of collapse during the excavation and construction. Delay in the Main Contractor schedule. Int’l IGM proposed an optimized solution by sloping the excavation 15% as shown above. The shoring system consists of installing a 15cm shotcrete wall retained by 3 to 6 rows of permanent nails. The length of the nails varied from 3m to 12m.
